GT500 clutch

Post by rbond »

Went to replace all the clutch plates and springs on my GT500, new OEM steel and a EBC set friction plates. Found the clutch hub nut tight, hardly any play with the basket, pinion gear nut WAS loose. A second or two with an electric impact driver tightened that. Any way, the EBC plates were the 12 tooth, I have the 18 tooth basket. I must have an early production GT to still have a T500 clutch basket. Finding a EBC CK3314 disk set for a T500 in the states so far has been impossible. So if any one needs a set of 12 tooth plates, PM me, they are even already soaked in oil ready for installation. So any suggestions for where to get reasonable OEM plates, or EBC, or Barnett, etc.?

It seems someone swapped out the basket on your bike as the earlier baskets with more slots were discontined way before the GT500.
It may be cheaper to look for a good 12tooth basket on ebay than to buy more friction plates.

Allan's suggestion is a good one - I usually see more of the 12 finger baskets on ebay than the 18s. Here's one that's not priced too badly:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SUZUKI-G ... ccessories" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I think Barnett offers the 18 finger frictions and steels but you will need to call them to verify:

http://www.barnettclutches.com/search/r ... 1-70-10003" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Last listing in the table is for a 71-75 T500 which *SHOULD* be the 18 finger plates but again you really need to call to verify this.

I think the e-bay clutch is what i will buy. The bike only had 9,000 miles on it when I bought it, so I really doubt the clutch was replaced by an owner. I think the correct plate number is 21442-37401. This is also used as a single plate in lot of other models, but it is not clear if it is 18 finger. The Barnett plates are 12 finger, already e-mailed them. I have not heard back from Sudco on theirs yet.

Does anyone know what the part number is for the 18 finger friction plate?

21441-15000 is for the 18 finger friction plates and according to the book I have it was offered up to the J model which is the last model this book covers.

I'll be hoping for you, the main issues are usually grooved slots on the basket fingers and a shakey basket due to slack rubbers. If its good dont forget to update the end clearance for the correct amount of lateral freeplay.
