Just got a new gt550, have some q's

hey, Got a gt550 in pretty decent condition for 900, runs well, though the carbs may need to be cleaned, but i have a few questions.

the rear tire is shot, it's an 18 inch rim, with a 4 inch wide tire, does this convert to a 18 110/90?

is there a good source for parts for these bikes? or is ebay my best bet?

im also in the search for some vintage style 2 stroke oil, that makes it smell and look like a two stroke

Yay! A GT550. I'm quite jealous. I have a GT380. I run the Suzuki brand two-stroke oil; it's what the manual recommends and seems right since it's a Suzuki bike. As long as it's burning oil, it'll smell like a two-stroke.

A 110/90 18 for the rear works fine. I just replaced both tires on my '75 GT550 and that's what I put on the rear.

As for parts, there are a few forums such as this one to look through, but ebay seems to be the place for me as well.

I'm running Motul two stroke oil. My buddy ran Yamalube. As stated above, it will smell and look like a smoker regardless of which oil you use. My biggest concern was making sure I got oil made for injection and not premix.

Also for parts, I always hit these guys up first:

http://www.andersonvintageparts.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

They have a huge stock of Suzuki parts. Their website appears to be on lockdown at the moment while they're reworking it, but usually they're quick to respond.

And, I know what you mean about the two-stroke smell. That along with the sound and look are so distinct; these are such exotic machines to see on the street these days. The GT380 was/is my first motorcycle. I had no prior motorcycle experience and despite a ton of research, I still just sorta got lucky buying that bike. I'm itching to move up to a T500 or GT550.

I also recommend Cycle Design for OEM. They found stuff for me I could not get anywhere else.

Edit: here is the correct url
http://www.cycledesignonline.com/fiche_ ... mfg=Suzuki" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

i tried that site, it seems like one of those sites where they're selling the domain name and just have a bunch of advertisements on it

For parts, go to the local Suzuki shop first, a lot of stuff is still available, and they pay the shipping that way. Next try this forum. Ebay works, some good deals there, also some shysters that buy cheap and sell high. Another good site for parts is http://motorcitypowersports.com/fiche_select.asp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; they have a real good parts department.

I have never dealt directly with http://www.andersonvintageparts.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; but others on this forum have, and may not have pleasant things to say.

By the way, congrats on the bike. I have a running 76 550, and a future project one.

On 2 stroke oil... check the label and make sure it says for injected use, most oils with an "R" at the end of the name or labeled as "racing" are for premix and are too thick to meter properly in the injection system as I understand.

Many happy days with your 550, I love mine.

By the way... My little sister and I were out one night about half wasted and she confided in me that when her hubby was out riding his 2 stroke dirt bike and came in smelling of 2 stroke smoke and sweat it really turned her on. I don't know about other women but, hey, it might work. Personally, I have never been told I smell good after riding a 2 stroke, but then again, most women don't get close enough to smell me.

Fortunately I don't have a little sister, but if I did that would be in the TMI category for sure. :lol: :lol:

Yikes, I got in too much of a hurry, it should read:
http://www.cycledesignonline.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

This is direct to the Suzuki databank:
