2stroke, if you are using aftermakret points, they may never set up correctly. Sometimes the slots won't let you move them far enough, sometimes the rubbing blocks are too short, etc. I got so frustrated trying to find working points that I s--- canned the whole idea and went to a Dyna S Electronic iggy.
After I did that, I was advised that if you go and buy the correct points and condensors from Suzuki, that they are good quality pieces and work correctly.
Personally, I am glad the freakin points are gone.

You may want to check the Vin# on the steering head. That 550 has 1972-73 carbs and head on the engine. Look like a great start to a 550 cafe project.

Fork gaiters say it's an early model as well.

WHY?
WHY?
WHY make it a hard tail? you WILL be sorry. its cool as is. I know lots of people that cut nice CB750s and made hardtails, and most of them wish they never did. the list of why is endless, but,
1 your gonna not be able to ride it over 10 miles without wanting off of it.
2 your changing the geometry of a proven safe bike with unknown specs.
3 you wont ever be able to sell it, once they ride it, the sale talk will end quickly
4 people that like hardtails are a vanishing species.
5 unless you want to be bounced and shook all over gods half acre, better leave it alone.
6 once you construct this thing your liable for its construction until the world stops spinning... a weld breaks people get hurt, YOU pay the bills.

Just bear in mind that the hard tail chopper style usually mixes poorly with three exhaust chambers and even worse with the stock three into four exhaust system. And if you switch to straight pipes, the bike becomes gutless as a two stroke needs a chamber shaped exhaust to work.
Good luck and keep us posted on your project!
