I bought a GT750 today to go along with my GT550 and GT380. It seems I can't stop buying these things.

Anywho.... the 750 is a 1973 model and it is in poor shape. It's been sitting since 1987 and has...ahem ... issues.

One of which is that it has no keys. I see different sellers on Fleabay that list "Factory cut keys", all you need to do is tell them the number stamped on your ignition switch and they can hook you up with a correct replacement key.

My 380 has "111" stamped on it and the 550 has "214" and both of these numbers are stamped on the key also. These numbers are also listed on the seller's Fleabay listing as viable choices. All the choices are in a 3 digit format.

The GT750 has 5 numbers stamped on it (22124) and none of the Fleabay vendors list any kind of key using a 5 digit format.

What gives?

Suzuki actually used reoccurring number sequences since it was the norm back in the 70s. So buying a key with the same number on it or cut to its tumblers configuration will work on your three digit locks.
Five digit keys are the earlier series of 60s type going into the early 70s so your 73 buffalo probably has on the original parts.
First year 72 Buffalos and possibly some 73s had the five digit keys you mention in your posting.
If you look closely you will see the five digit key locks are one tumbler sided as opposed to being double sided as the three digit ones are.
Meaning a five digit key can only be inserted in one direction.
See this seller and ask for your number in the five digit code, he will make it for you if he doesnt have it factory cut in his stock.

He does have those 5 digits keys under a different listing (I just bought a couple of 5 digit keys from him for my '73 Buff also 8) ). Check this listing and you can see your key as being available. 8) 8)

I did order a key from the second listing so hopefully that should work.

I wondered if there was a second style of key, and it sounds like there is. If you read some of the key ads on Fleabay it sounds like all the GT's used the same key blank, but that's not true.

The 750 may get pushed into the corner while I work on the 550. Bill Bune has my 550 crank as we speak (to install new seals) and I am doing some other little things to it to get her going. But I wanted a key for the 750 just to check it out. Like I said... the 750 is rough :(

You are 100% correct there are two styles of key in use on some of the GTs.
The first single sided tumbler key we talked about had a more square top design and angled slot on one side. The later double sided tumbler keys had a rounded top and slot following this shape.
The key you will receive will be the first style mentioned.
Two strokes, its just that simple.

I got the key and it is very small, and you are right Allan, it is just a one sided affair. It works though, and that's all that matters. :D
