it was running now wont

Post by two-stroke-brit »

hi all, i got my buffalo all together inc new clocks an all it started second press of the starter :D :D ,
so many thanks to all that helped :) ,
i have been just pottering around the streets not going to far as you never know what might fall off  .
it ran like a champ ,only trying to break it in gently.(new seals and rebore)
but gas was weeping from the bowls of the center and right hand carb.
also i noticed i had got those two throtle cables reversed so i dismantled the air filter /carbs and reversed said cables checked the float valves and i gave the float tabs a small tweak upwards .
reassembled it all, resynced them and now it wont start .
i managed to flaten the battery but its not getting any gas to the plugs.
i cant beleve that the small tweek on the tabs has stopped the gas completly as i would think that the one i didnt touch has nowt either.
any clues while i wait on the recharge of dead battery
thanks mark

Mark. Check the simple stuff first. Open a float drain to see if fuel is or isn't there. Use the prime setting on the petcock to make sure fuel is getting there. Make sure you have power at the coils. Sometimes the kill button can act up. Full choke, and no throttle with cold engine. Did a plug or two foul out? There's probably lots more, but there's a start. Cheers.

Just building on what Fred has offered - checking if fuel is actually getting to the float bowls is a good first step. Given this is a rebuild, as the bike hasn't been on the road in a while you could easily have fuel petcock problems due to loose stuff clogging things up.

Did you put back the vacuum line to the petcock? If not the fuel will flow only in prime position....I learned it the hard way.

yes thanks vacuum pipe is conected, it has gas in the bowls, spark at the plugs ,fully charged battery,
but it will fire on the first crank (not enough to run) then die ,
then nothing and when i check the plugs they are dry no gas getting through.
tried new plugs ,same deal ,bang then nothing.
confussed mark.

Well - right amount of air+right amount of fuel+enough compression+spark at the right time=happiness. :D

If the plugs are dry, then it can't be getting fuel so it most probably is carb related. You can check this by flooding the carbs (kill switch open, full choke and crank the engine over a few times - then close the kill switch and try it again). If it fires and then dies, or if it doesn't run and the plugs are still dry then you are on to something.

thanks ian ,i checked the timming and it is a smidge advanced (0.005 thou) on the indicator in the plug hole deal.
i was thinking of retarding the timming a little say 0.01 to 0.02 thous.
i think that would help with starting . :)

i had nightmares of holed pistons etc, so compession is about 110 on all three cylinders on cold motor.

i tried your killswitch trick and it nearly started (splutering)also signs of gas on the plugs. :)
i kicked it over with full choke and full throtle in an atempt to get as much thro as possible and it started but died ,i think the battery is getting weak also.
also the choke cable has a good 3mm of slack before it pulls anything.
is the only adhustment for that at the choke plungers on the carbs :?
its so close i just need your help to figure it out.
thanks guys mark.

Check to see if you put the slides in backwards.
