T500R Speedos

Post by MikeH1A »

There is a very smart looking 71 Titan being advertised locally. It seems to be suggesting that it is original rather then restored. I note that it has a speedo that reads in KPH. My R model has a MPH speedo.

Did the 71 R model come out with a kilometre speedo originally?

Thats a good point, the parts book shows 70-71 models as having the same speedometer part number and the 72 model with a different type.
If thats the case the 71 didnt have a kmh speedo but it would be good to see that bikes speedos face to have a closer look at it for authenticity.
Can you post up a pic from the ad

Would it not depend on the market the bike was originally sold into ? If it was originally a European bike, then it would have a KM gauge - correct ? Or not correct ?

Good point Ian, so its possible its a Euro spec speedo or some other metric country market version on that bike.
Its definitely not showing up in the parts book i have as an optional fitting.
This now makes me wonder if the T500 Cobra or the Mk2 versions ever had km/h units as well, but I've never seen any.

Allan,

Such a quick response - always amazed at this idea of different timezones, yet people connect.

Here's the link to the ad, where you can see the instruments.

I was just wondering if this is an import or a rebuilt bike done here with imported parts (as we all do). There isn't much history in the ad at this stage. I find it hard to think this is a NZ new bike - in this condition and with such low miles/kms. We Kiwis are renown for buying bikes and then thrashing them to within an inch of their life :D Usually, we'd then give them a quick rebore and then proceed to torment the poor sods all over again 8) 8)

Well it looks legit but was it for a T500??? the tachs not correct with the 8000 rpm redline so could it be this set of gauges was from a T350??? or at least the tach was if nothing else.
Fred is that parts book of yours a Canadian market book?? my T500 parts book covers the Cobra to J model and doesnt show that info for the speedos

Yes Mike i was just sitting here doing some ebay searching,,,LOL quick response

For what its worth, the Zedder cross reference actually shows 7 part numbers for the speedo, and 5 for the tach for the R model. Tough to tell how accurate it it, although it is generally pretty good. :?

Yes, the tacho caught my eye too. It just doesn't look right even at first glance does it. It will be interesting to follow the auction to see how he describes things as questions get asked.
