Mark.
You are slightly mistaken.
The SRIS system was used on all models to the end of production. There was a change made to the routing of the lines at some point in 73 production, that gave each cylinder equal flow. Check your valves for operation (they are supposed to work only one way), and put them back in service. They definitely keep the blue haze to a minimum under acceleration. Keeps your "tree hugger neighbours" happy too. Cheers.

Mark,
When you clean out the SRIS one way valves, don't be tempted to blow through them with compressed air. The boys over in Kamp K discovered that they blow off (open) at about 2 or 3 PSI and a 60psi air line can ruin them.
Mityvac is a good test tool to see if they flow OUT and not IN. There was a thread on these pesky things a while ago IIRC.

Also, the filters are very important. Even if the mesh is gone, put them back in, or you might experience what I did.....one came apart and thrashed a piston top. BlueBoy has no SRIS, and I can't tell the difference. Of course, I don't let it idle much, so oil doesn't have time to build up.

The early ones still need to be unscrewed to loosen them even though they dont have threads. This turning procedure allows the taper to spin and ease the valve out from its tapered seat. The later ones that have the threads,,well its self explanatory.
If they dont have an aluminum washer behind them against the engine cases they are the taper fit type.
Its best to soak them in gasolene first, then remove them, shake off the fuel and blow/suck on the hose using a long length so you dont get residue in your mouth.

They can be taken apart and cleaned/repaired, BUT then they are really susceptable to coming apart. That's how mine happened to fail; I had taken them apart, and put them back in without the screens. Don't so that.

They ARE very fiddly little things, but as rngdng says, they CAN be taken apart....but VERY carefully......and even more carefully put back together.
The spring inside is particularly suceptible to damage because it is REALLY delicate. I think the wire used for the spring is something like 27 or 29 gauge so it's almost like a hair.
I remove and clean my valves every 2 or 3 years with some solvent. If they're REALLY sludged up then I dunk 'em in my immersion-type carb cleaner for 15 minutes or so. That smartens 'em up.

The screens are very rare. Like I said, if you have to put the old ones back in, at least put the plastic frames back in. The other option I found to keep the SRIS valves together is to sloder the outside of the valve after putting it back together. Acid-core solder and a propane torch do a nice job.

I removed the SRIS completely from my bike and plugged the holes. Have not had a problem, it does not blow any more smoke than it did before I removed them and it's one less thing to cause a leak or have to screw around with. Most of the screens are junk by now anyway.
