GT750 CV carbs single cable okay?

Do any of you guys run your GT750's with just a single throttle cable with the CV carbs? I recently fixed up a CB750F2 and I remember people on that forum saying the "push" cable doesn't do a whole lot, insurance if the return spring flies off or something. The reason I ask, a while ago I bought new cables really cheap on Ebay, why? well the small print said 10" longer than stock - I didn't see that part... maybe I should put some ape hangers on....

The PUSH cable is actually there to PULL the carbs shut. :)

In an emergency, you could get away with one cable, but the spring tension is not all that high and with a slightly sticky OPEN cable you could be in trouble.

I wouldn't build a bike that way, but as a get home it's OK. There's your first opinion.

It seems like the springs on each end of the throttle linkage are more than up to the task of snapping the throttle shut. Safety shmaftey, this thing is already a widow maker

Longer cables can be shortened but for the sake of keeping it stock or just because its designed that way i'd keep the two cables anyway on a daily rider.

Allan is right. Just remove one nipple, shorten the inner and outer and solder on a new nipple. It's all pretty easy and worth the peace of mind not to have someone give you a piece of their mind.

Now if I could only remember the URL of the a good source of small cable nipples.

I've made my own cables as well, BUT I've also seen them run fine with only the "pull" cable.

I have it running on just the "pull" cable right now , I can't tell the difference. I will try to get a solder-on or screw-on nipple for the "push" cable. Like I said alot of the riders at the Honda SOHC forum just use the one cable.

Another nice thing about having the two cables on the bike if its designed for them is you have a built in spare. If the pull one breaks you can switch it out and use the push one in its place and at least you can get home with a reasonably working throttle.

When I bought my bike, it only had one cable. I put it back as it was intended to be with dual cables and noticed immediately that the throttle worked much easier and it was a lot less tiring on the throttle hand.

As much as I agree in principle on this one, it's not consistently applied on other bikes.

All the GSX series bikes had a bank of four CV carbs with ONE pull cable.
Suzuki saw fit to do away with the extra cable on exactly the same type of carbs on those bikes as on GT's.

It could be argued that there's an extra return spring helping to close the throttle I suppose...

Mechanically I can't see why there is a need for two cables, there is enough tension in the springs to adequately return the throttle.

They are good as a spare and as peace of mind, but I doubt they're absolutely necessary.

So the answer appears to be, Yes, No and maybe, but not necessarily in that order.
