GT500 Ignition

Post by rbond »

Ok, I built 4 CDI circuits, replaced a bad pulser coil, no to intermittent sparks. Will not run. Checked charging coils one still shows good resistance, the other test shows very low. I put both new ones in over a year ago, apparently they don't make them as well as they used to. So, I am going to replace both again, get a wiring loom kit, and since I am custom building CDI boxes, I will change the block connectors to a configuration that makes hooking them up easier and more secure. It is too much trouble trying to remove epoxy without destroying a coil, so thats why I am going to the extra expense of both new ones. The original wiring is hard and brittle, so that is why new wiring. I had made repairs once, they are still good, I think...
If the wires for the battery charging coils are good, I will leave them alone (crossing my fingers). This is getting to be an expensive lesson in wiring bikes up, at this rate I should be an expert on GT500's. If after all this and still no running, I think I can put my hands on one stick of dynamite    By the way, what is the wire gauge used on these bikes, I want to get the right size. Thanks in advance. (Pray for me)

I'm no electrical engineer, but I'd check the slow and high speed coil charge at kickover and see if it's generating anything and then follow that through the wiring to the CDI and from there to the coils - just don't forget to switch voltage scales on the other side of the CDI.

Has the magnetic rotor lost it's magnetism by any chance?

You probably know all this stuff already, but in case someone else needed the link..

Just ordered both charging coils today. From the first time installing, I hope with all new wires it will be a little easier. For some reason all the coils have very small 'tits' to connect the wires to. Makes for soldering a good joint difficult to say the least. Then of course, liberal application of epoxy to coat those same connections so the vibration won't shake the wires off. I learned that lesson the hard way. I can now honestly say I can remove the cover and rotor from a GT500 in 5 minutes. I know exactly what tools and in what sequence to pull it off. Working on these old bikes is lessons in frustration, patience, humility, etc. and great joy when it starts working like it is supposed to! Back to riding!!! You get to be real 'intimate' with your bike this way, you can feel and hear everything almost like it was a part of you. I keep hoping I will reach a point again where I spend more time riding than wrenching...... I feel confidant in that 'cause it is a Suzuki afterall

On Smoke riders website, 'smokin paul says he can put a chrysler cdi on a GT500. There is no link for more info, and an e-mail to smokin' paul has not brought forth any info either. So, does anyone have this information, I like to have alternatives to just about anything, keeps from getting locked into one source, not a good thing in my opinion.
