Hi,
First test ride on the GT550 today, just a short blast round the block, wow - forgot how pokey these old bikes can be!!
However, when I got back there was a gearbox oil leak. I think its the rubber bung on the kickstart shaft end (the one in the clutch release housing). It popped out before - it was loose, so I put a new one in but I suspect it has come out again. I will have a look tomorrow, but has anyone else had this issue, and what caused it and how did you solve it. I presume the gearbox is not pressurised by the engine itself (as in a four stroke with crankcase breather) so I am a bit puzzled by it.
Also, how do you check the gearbox oil level is correct (for when I top it up) as there is no sight window?
Your advice would be much appreciated,
Kind Regards
Steve

Re: Rubber bung
Yep, rubber bung had popped out, I have re seated it and it seems to have gone in further this time, so I will keep an eye on it.
I changed the gearbox oil, and found the levelling screw, I am sure my "P" reg 550 had a sight glass but it was over 45 years ago and I cant be sure..
Weekend in sight, so hopefully I can have a smoke around and see how it goes..
Have fun out there

Re: Rubber bung
If I remember correctly, the plug has a slight taper to it & the narrow end goes in first.
Make sure to wipe the surfaces to remove any oil.
A thin smear of case sealant on the OD of the plug will lubricate it so it goes in easily & stays put.
I use the same case sealant that is used for sealing the crankcase halves.

Re: Rubber bung
Thanks Jabcb,
I put some gasket seal on it (a thin smear) but its defo gone in further than it did before - I used a socket to push it in evenly too.
Will post how it goes,
Kind Regards
