Suzuki 2 Strokes

Morning all. Noticed a minor issue with the tacho in that when I start the engine the needle rises to match the revs but then falls to rest when I pull the clutch and engage 1st gear. It then operates as normal when I ride off?? It has a new cable. Obviously one half of the gearbox stops when a gear is engaged at standstill but my concern is that as the tacho is driven off the oil pump drive that the pump isn’t working for a brief period. I did 30 miles on it yesterday so the pump is clearly doing its job I just can’t work out why the tacho needle is behaving like it is. As far as I can tell it’s not possible to fit the drive gear incorrectly so does anyone have any ideas as to what’s going on please.

Normal behavior.

The oil pump is driven by a transmission gear, and the tach is driven by the oil pump.
So the oil pump & tach are not driven when you pull the clutch.

While it seems like this would be a bad design, the T500 is one of the longest lasting vintage two stroke engines. The bike sips two stroke oil at such a slow rate that not a having a sip every now & then is not a problem.

But as a practice, I do not sit at for extended periods at traffic lights & etc with the bike in gear & the clutch disengaged.
