Hi, I'm in need of some guidance / ideas regarding a gearbox issue, I've been restoring a 76 GT 500, the engine and gearbox seemed fine before and have done no work on the bottom end of the engine other than replace the rear chain and removing the gear lever to fit a new clutch cable. Now its seems stuck in neutral and won't change up or down while spinning the rear wheel. Any idea's on what could be causing this ???
Thanks SW

Re: GT 500 GEAR BOX PROBLEM
You probably undid the wrong bolt when you drained the gearbox oil. The 'other bolt' is the gearbox dêtent which affects the gearchange cam.
Think of how stupid the average person is, then realise that half of them are more stupid than that.

Re: GT 500 GEAR BOX PROBLEM
Your post doesn’t actually mention that you drained the oil so it may well not be the cause.
However, if you did drain the oil and chose one of the three hex head bolts that look like drain screws on the lower crankcase, make sure you unscrewed the one furthest to the rear of the engine that also sits the lowest.
The two nearer to the front of the lower crankcase that sit side by side in the cross direction approx 60mm apart relate to the gearbox as stated by previous poster and don’t need to be removed for a simple oil change.
PM me your email address if it’s not clear enough and I’ll send pics that explain better than my verbiage.
Hope you get it sorted
Pete
