I'm hoping that someone with more knowledge can weigh in on this subject.
I've now measured the piston ring gaps on 4 Suzuki's: my 1976 GT750A, and three T500's (a '71, '75 and a '77 GT500). That's 18 rings total! The measured range was .76mm to 1.07mm with the median at .94. In other words every single ring end gap was well over the Suzuki recommended range of .2-.4mm and all were near the 'replace at' gap of .85 mm. GT750s and T500's use the same pistons and have the same ring specs. (these specs per the Suzuki bulletin attached). Each measurement was taken with the ring squared up in the least worn part of each cylinder
Each of the engines had decent compression before disassembly. I'm beginning to wonder if I've missed a service spec that calls for a larger ring gap. Maybe because the consequences of a too-small ring gap are so serious?
What ring gap do other fellows aim for when installing new rings?
