New chain and sprockets for 1970 T350-II?

Post by sawheelman »

I need to replace the 525 chain and front (14T) and rear (38T) sprockets on my (new to me) 1970 T350-II.

The width of the old chain is 0.740". A new DID non-O/X ring chain is 0.811" wide. The X-ring chain is 0.866". Anyone know how wide a chain I can put on the bike without having interference with cases? Any chain recommendations?

I can't find a 38 tooth rear sprocket listed on the JT website. They have a 41 tooth item which, if I put a 15T in front, will give me almost the same ratio (0.3659) as the stock 14/38 combo (0.3684).

Any thoughts/advice/guidance would be appreciated. Thanks!

I used a generic o ring 525 on my T350 and it wore away a bit of alloy webbing near the front sprocket so I put an extra locking washer behind the sprocket to move it out a little.
I know the fix moved the chain a little out of line but after 30 years of use and still with the same chain, I can confidently say it made no difference to chain life and it stopped the casing wear.

I did the same on my T250
Are the sprocket teeth hooking? I often change the chain and not sprockets, unless the teeth show wear and begin hooking.

After 20 years using the same chain you can see not many miles are done on the bike so the sprockets are still in good condition with no hooking.

The valleys between the teeth look elongated/asymmetrical to me. I've tried to upload a picture but it keeps telling me the file is too large. It's less than 1 Mb. What's the size limit?

If it is showing wear I would replace them. It does seem 38 tooth sprockets are not easily available, 41 tooth are more available.

Just to bring some closure to this thread: I ended up buying a standard (non-sealed) 525 DID chain as well as two new JT Sprockets - front 15T (JTF419.15) and rear 41T (JTR812.41).
