GT550 carb overflow

Post by SClubSuzuki »

Hi all, I rebuilt the carbs on my 73 GT550k, thought I did a meticulous job of it, until watching 2 of them leak through the overflow tube after installation. This is after purchasing new floats and carefully measuring the height of each. I WISH i had tested them off the bike but what’s done is done. Besides the float height is there anything else I should check that might cause the overflow? Thanks,
Chris

Did you replace the needle valve, are the needle valve clear of dirt? Are they Mukuni needle valves? Rebuild kits needle valve require bending the float tab at to hard an angle and the valve binds in the seat.

No I didn’t replace them but made sure they were totally clean. Would the choke have anything to do with it? The kit I bought had new choke valves, even though the original ones were ok

I don't see any reason the choke should effect height. Many will tell you to stay away from rebuild kits because they don't match original jets.

If they leak a bit after sitting overnight, then you might have a leaking petcock.
Needle valves are intended to control flow and can leak a smidgen when parked if there is a petcock issue.

Doesn’t happen very often, but the overflow tube can become loose & leak at the base.

There may be a problem with the float: leaking/sunken float, dented float, or the float is heavier than it should be.
You can check the fuel level. See: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=13872&p=172459&hili ... ol#p172459
