Newbie Looking for Help

Post by Tristan530 »

Hello folks,

Alex here from Los Angeles.

I recently purchased a 1976 GT550. Ten years ago I sold my 1974 GT550 for some unknown reason and decided to get another (hanging on to this one this time).

For the life of me I cannot see how to remove the cover on the gauges. The high beam indicator light if not working and I want to check if the bulb is just burnt out. I removed the cover off of my 1974 years ago to replace burnt out bulbs, but I am just not seeing what may be obvious.

Guidance is appreciated.

Thanks,

Alex

Thanks jabcd,

First place I looked was my Clymer manual and a parts manual. I see how I can remove take entire gauge cluster but couldn't find where to just remove the cover. I suppose that I might need to remove the cluster to see how to take the cover off.

I just did those bulbs on my GT550 and i believe all you need for the high beam light is to remove the 2 nuts for the gauge cluster, take it off, i removed the speedo and tach lines just be careful, remove screws on the bottom, the black middle panel should come out. You might have to take off the mounting bracket as well. Then just pull the the bulb fixture out which looked like a black rubber in the shape of an old keyhole with wires running into it. You can tell exactly which ones are going into which light.

word of advice. when you push the rubber bulb holders back in after changing the bulbs spray a small amount of wd40 or similar on them, it makes it far easier. in fact when i pull them out i usually give them a spray, as sometimes they get very stuck and you can rip them in half :D
cheers, dd.

Thank you. I did in fact need to remove the mounting bracket. Was more complicated than I remember.

I wish the fellow that owned the bike before me had taken this advice. I ripped the rubber and had to pull out the bulb housing very carefully with a set of long nose pliers.
