Good news Karl,
Problem solved. I renewed all of the dodgy looking bullet and spade connectors around the battery and regulator area and then tried the new ignition and everything worked. I thought it must be something silly like a bad connection the way everything failed at once. I also proved the original ignition switch was bad. Lets see how far I get next time I go out.
