What does a GT triple pipe look like inside?

Post by Craig380 »

Has anyone cut open a GT triple exhaust?

I wondered if they like this Kawasaki triple exhaust inside, that is, like a chamber within a cosmetic chrome outer.

Any ideas?

In a fit of chopping some crappy pipes up Dave and i took the good header pipes off and on these 750 pipes and this is what we saw.
By the weld as the chamber starts from the header theres some rectangular raised plates about two inches across and about three inches long arranged around inside the pipe.
Inside of these raised plates are some perforated sheet metal, these things look rather flimsy and are basically spot welded on. They look like nothing more than a diffuser of some sort and are "perfect" for plugging up with carbon and becoming useless.
From there on is the first baffle seperator plate and then two more onwards to the rear.
The baffle fits into these three sections so the gases can go out and around them.
Sorry i have no pics...
I do believe this is whats plaguing one of the outer pipes on my Buffalo, the P.O lowsided the outer pipe and the flat section is scraped up.
Now it rattles like jingling crap at around 1800 rpms and i think one of those raised plates is jarred loose, BUT i cant get in there without cutting it off at the pipe to chamber joint.
Two strokes, its just that simple.

Theres money in them there pipes, so be careful where youre cutting,,,LOLOL.
Dont worry i'll take them away next time so they are not cluttering up your room anymore, UNLESS someone on the forum is looking for one of them and wishes to buy it.

thanks Allan, I've removed some of that wire mesh stuff from one of my outers.

The pic of the Kawa chamber clearly shows an expansion chamber within the pipe, I guess the Suzis don't have that ...

You mean the wire mesh actually rotted and blew out into the rear chamber plates up into the baffles????
You are correct,,the Suzuki GTs have nothing more than four heavy chrome plated lumps hanging from the sides of the bike.
That would tell you that fitting anything resembling an expansion chamber of close proportions for a stock GT would make a big improvement if jetted correctly to it.

If I can find something to cut it open with I have a perfect 550 candidate pipe for disection. It has a hole rusted through the outer wall close to the exhaust outlet that is big enough to stick your fist into.

Sorry, don't even own a sawsall, much less a bandsaw. But I know where somebody who has a sawsall, if I can get it cut, I'll see if I can get some pictures on here. I was thinking of cutting it just in front of the weld seam on the top and bottom, from the rear up to the where the header is weld is. That way if somebody wanted the front part for a future project it would not be damaged.

Not so easy, the rear baffle seperater plates are spot welded to the pipe so splitting it as you plan will still leave it attached at those welds.

The Gt750 pipes are not shaped like an expansion chamber inside. The muffler is basically a long tube with 4 or five disks through which the baffle tube fits.

The are spot welded to the inner half of the pipe but I doubt they are welded to the outside as well.

If you look carefully at a pipe you can see the spot weld marks. If you look at a baffle tube, you can see the round sections that correspond to those baffle plates.

I have some pictures here somewhere, but I didn't bother to cut up teh pipes.

At the front they have sound absorbtion material to stop resonance which as Allan pointed out peels off and generally is a complete waste of time.

If you were feeling really tricky, you could grind down the seams slightly to split the pipes into two halves, remove the crap from the front of the pipes, knock out the baffle plates, fabricate a set of cones to weld in, along with a straight stinger and weld it all back together.

It's what some of the RD pilots used to do years ago when the rules said pipes had to be stock looking

where it is spot welded just drill it out .you can always re-weld it.

i disected a rotten 550 pipe today. the front cone has a liner of mesh up to the bend, where there is a plate like the rear baffle plates. the rear has three plates that support the baffle( and make separate chambers). the rear plates are only welded to the inboard half of the pipe and lifted right out after cutting.
not even close to a proper expansion chamber.
pictures at eleven. :D

Sounds like the 550 is the same basic design as the 750. I'd like to see those pictures too.
