Post by johnakay »

for a spin. the bike that is.
just had the accent ignition fitted by JMC restorations.
I can't fit it due to pace maker so no can do strobe light.
I fit a new regulator/rectifier from rex speed shop.
move the ignition switch to the top ,I dont bend so easy these days.
bike ran well no surging etc .
once warmed up for the 1st time I opened her up and wow didn't expect it to go that quick.
so in all a very happy chappy.

Sweet. Did you order the ignition direct from Accent? Thanks.

Nice scooter. I just ordered an Accent for my 380, but will take some time to get it. I hear all good things about it.

The thread title still makes me smile. I thought you was admitting to a crime involving the demise of your 'other half' until I read bit further down the first post.

Good to see you back on a T500 John. At one point after you sold your 72 you had thought you were done with them if I remember correctly.

the accent ignition is working fine.
put a new regulator/rectifier on only to discover that the bike is not charging.
its at a two stroke specialist locally.
didn't there was one till I ask on Teesside bike forum.
so hopefully it'll get sorted soon.
bike runs lovely till you hit 4,000 revs or more then the vibes hit.
by this time I hit 65/70mph so I keep it at 60 or less.
every now and then I give it a good blast for a mile or so to clear out the two stroke oil.
definitely get very cloudy behind. lol.

At one point after you sold your 72 you had thought you were done with them if I remember correctly.

yes I did but got offered one cheap from a guy in the USA ,other wise I wouldn't bought it.
he ask on face book what its worth and I said £2000.
he said I can have it for that($2000)
I was making a load of Kawasaki grab rail's about 4 grand worth.
as it happens he import bikes from the states.
to cut the story short got it brought over and he got it registered etc.
did about 100 miles then the crank seals gave up.
got the so called expert to do the engine and by the time I got it back winter has arrived.
had to wait the following year to ride it by this time had the bike 2 years coming up 3 years.
then the pandemic came full lock down, so only did about 300 miles last year.
this year only manage about 140 miles so far.
so done less than 600 miles since I bought it.
so far the bike owes me £1600.
buying it etc was paid for by my labour with those grab rails.
to be honest I wouldn't of bought one not at the price most were asking for.
most of them were in my book scrap and wanting 2 grand!
that one came up at the right time.
this before picture,I'm sure you've all seen it before

as turned out the bike is charging as it should but the new reg/rec from rexspeed is not doing it job
as it should.
had a bike electrician to have a look and this what he said....
(The regulator/rectifier has failed on the T500.. stator output with everything connected is 6.4vac, stator tested stand alone is upto 60vac the reg/rec failure is absorbing the voltage and not converting it.)
so are others out there that does work?

Took a look at Rex’s instructions for the T500 regulator/rectifier:
https://www.rexs-speedshop.com/wp-conte ... -Guide.pdf

The T500 has a split alternator with a charging coil, and a lighting coil that is only active when the lights are on.
See the T500 wiring diagram:
Image

The Rex R/R only has two yellow wires for AC current. Looks like they goofed -- they don't tell you to connect to both alternator coils.

I used a Tympanium on my T500. My installation & updated wiring diagram is here:
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4858

The Tympanium is popular with vintage Triumph guys. So you may be able to get it in the UK.
Alternatively it's likely will work fine if you adapt the Rex R/R to match my wiring diagram.

Modern rectifiers are more efficient than the technology Suzuki used. They produces more current & less heat.

Modern voltage regulators are also much better than the technology Suzuki used. A modern rectifier does a good job of limiting voltage to around 14.5V (or whatever the specific unit was set to), while the original rectifier allowed voltages up to around 16V.

16V is too much for modern sealed batteries. If you are using a modern sealed, maintenance free or AGM battery, then you should use a modern voltage regulator or modern rectifier/regulator.

Thanks for the wiring diagrams. I was confused with the Reg/Rec wiring as none of them make it clear in the instructions 👍

the old regulators are good according to others .they very rarely fail but rectifiers do.
anyway soon find out.
