So can someone point me to an online manual, or tell me which timing marks I should have the breakers fire off on my 72 T500?

when you use a strobe to set the timing use a white marker as you can see this better than black!

Keith the link provided to you by Odin has the information you are looking for.
The correct way to time your bike is to measure the BTDC distance. On a 1972 model the distance should measure 3.4mm.
It is my understanding that the timing marks on the case are there for a refence point only and should only be used exclusively in an emergency until the motor can be set up correctly.
Once you time up to the proper BTDC distance then you can put a strobe on it and see where you are at using the mark on the case as a reference.

Timing marks on the case could differ slightly, e. g. on my K-model 3,5mm and 3,1mm BTDC.

Thanks, I got a depth gage with a threaded adapter for the spark plug hole. Can't use a timing light yet, cause I didn't confirm the sparking.
