Help with Electrics 73 Titan

Post by Dave Robbo »

The right indicator warning light on the dash doesn’t work although the flashers are fine. The left side all works fine including the dash warning light.I've removed the clocks and checked wiring and earths and refitted. Also the neutral warning light is intermittent when ignition is turned on.

Not fitted a led bulb have you?

Just thinking it's possible that a PO has fitted a led bulb. The 500 diagram I have shows a wire from the right hand indicators (green) going to the repeater bulb, and a wire from the left indicators (black) going to the other side, so for one side to work, it must be wired ok unless the 'black' wire to the repeater is actually an earth and black/white. The reason I mentioned led bulb is that if it is one, it'll only work when current flows one way as it is a diode. Lots of folks have done it!

the wires from the indicators go to a double socket. b[L]ack wire from the left indicator goes to the double socket. the 2 wires from there go to the idiot light and into the harness. the g[R]een wire on the right goes to the other double socket, thence to the idiot light and harness. with the symptoms you describe it's got to be one of the green wires [the one to the idiot light] that has either come out or it's corroded, so it doesn't make contact. can't be anything else [none led of course] :D

Ok guys this developed a bit more today while I was checking connections and moving wires around the whole lot went dead. I checked with the meter and eventually found if I connect a wire from earth on battery to earth on the bike everything comes back on suggesting the earthing system isn’t working. I can take a new wire and bolt to earth and we’re back up and running but I still haven’t solved we’re the original fault is. This still doesn’t fix the initial problems with the indicator warning light or the neutral light although I’ve still to try things in the previous two posts. Just wondering about the earth problem.

ok, if the left side indicators idiot light works ok, then it's definitely the green wire to the idiot light that's at fault. you probably know this anyway, but all earth wires on the gt's are black with a white tracer, so follow all those and see if any are loose/corroded. i always put an earth wire from my battery straight to the frame - always  you say the neutral light is intermittent when you switch the ignition on? this is either a wire again - which is blue, so follow it from the switch up to the idiot light and make sure all connections are good. if you take the neutral light switch off [better if the gearbox is drained first] there's a small brass prong inside it. if that's not making a good contact with the switch via a little brass bit that the blue wire attaches to, then it can flicker/work/not work, depending on what mood it's in. if it's that, just gently bend the brass prong outwards a tad more so it makes a better contact. don't forget to grease the face of the switch up before refitting or you'll get a slight [annoying] weep from it. when i build my gt engines i usually throw the 'o' ring away off the switch and make a little paper gasket instead. grease it or welseal it both sides and it will never leak. keep us informed how you get on :D

Ok guys I’ve sorted the neutral light but really can’t find the problem with the left indicator idiot warning light. Anyway of bypassing with new wires to check ?

the left indicators flash ok? if so it can't be the indicator switch itself. take the idiot light out of the back of the clock and test it. there should be 2 wires coming from it, a black one and a light green one - although the colours are not important. test it on a 12v battery, black on +ve and green on -ve and see if it lights. then swap the wires round, green on +ve and black on -ve and see if it lights. if it lights both ways you have a problem with the double socket connection [the black one] as i said earlier. if it only lights one way round then you've got an led bulb in there. one thing you could try is with a multi meter. ignition on, indicator switch to the left, see if you have power to the black wire in the double socket. one thing you could have done is put the wrong black wire to the double socket, but i doubt that, although depending on the state of the harness inside the headlamp, it's quite easy to mix a black/white wire with an all black one. it's something simple, i can assure you :D

I’ve decided to renew all the wiring and blocks behind the headlight. Also looks like a wire missing from the earth group this is probably the idiot light problem but due to poor connections in other areas it’s a mess plus the bike deserves better.
