Can anyone tell me what this ground wire goes to, or used to go to?

Originally there is a ground wire connected to the Phillips head screw you can see just behind the wire it in the photo.

So it is connected to the cooling shroud? What is the purpose? Does the rubber mounted engine need this extra ground lead?

Don't know - when I put my engine back in the frame I just hooked it back up as per original. An expert may jump in with an explanation. As supporting info, in the Haynes manual on page 44 they make a point of mentioning not to forget to connect it, and in the Suzuki shop manual on page 51 it is shown connected in one of the photos. Could just be another case of over engineering .....

Yep. One end to the coil mount bolt and the other to the front center shroud mount. Beats me why they did this. Seems like the ground strap - the wide braided one would be more than enough.
I hooked mine up anyway. I even bought a new one to be sure of its integrity. 36851-02331.

Apparently it does, Jaybob......
I think the VERY conservative designers at Suzuki used a "belt and suspenders" approach in a lot of their work. OTOH, THEY probably already knew what most of US eventually learn......80% of electrical problems can usually be traced back to a bad ground.....
