T500 oil level mod measurement please....

Post by casperdog »

Hi, I've started to do the mod on my '71 bike.
Does any one have a later 1400cc bottom crankcase handy to measure for me please.
I'm after the drop from the joint face to the top of the webbing. Might as well make it the same as the factory... :D :D
I've got some 2.5mm thick ally plate to make up the piece with...what's the recommended bond to use? Araldite? JB Weld?
Any advice greatly received.
Many thanks
Phil

Thanks for the eBay link..thought these were now unobtainable so didn't bother looking. May go down that route even with a possible 6 week shipping wait..
Thanks

I decided to go the home made route...ally plate bonded in with JB weld.

JB Weld is good stuff. I've even made a small fin on the engine and it never came off in the two years ownership.

I call this oil dam a restricted oil dam. I designed it 15 years ago for my T500K after reading an article from Kevin Cameron about oil drag problems on racing engines.
Their solution was maintaining higher oil level in transmission housing and lower oil level in primary (clutch) housing. It was similar to the solution Suzuki adapted to T500 later on except Cameron was using oil jets to limit backflow into primary case. Suzuki used overflow wall/dam.

Also note custom made gearwheels for 5th gear with 24:19 teeth instead of 23:20 stock. With smaller front sprocket, it gives a nice acceleration boost in lower gears while the performance is kept the same in 5th gear.
