EBC After market disc for GT500 & GT750

Post by Zunspec4 »

Hello all,

While pursuing some technical input from EBC regarding the front brake set-up on my Seeley T500 race bike I was very kindly offered the opportunity to try one of their recent disc offerings for the GT500/750. The new style disc has a contemporary disc carrier vice the solid carrier previously offered. Here's some photos so you can check it out.

It certainly looks the part

We used the same EBC disc on the GT250 cafe build. We used a more modern twin-piston Kawasaki Ninja caliper so there is a lot of unused brake surface.

Nice one jabcb  .

I don't know when this style of disc appeared in the EBC range but I am hoping going with the stock 6.5mm thickness vice the slimmed down 5mm I have been using will eliminate the warping issues I have been having.

The GT250 & GT380 use the small OD disc with an OD of 276mm. EBC disc MD3014 fits.
The GT500, GT550 & GT750 use the big OD disc with an OD 296mm. EBC disc MD3019 fits.

The MD disc are pretty heavy & ugly. My 2010 EBC catalog doesn’t have the VMD discs. The VMD discs are a lot lighter & cooler looking. We bought the VMD3019 for the GT250 in January 2017. I think EBC first sold them closer to 2017 than 2010.

The caliper adapter we are using on the GT250 build requires the next size up disc. That’s why we are using the same big disc that you have.

The pad swept area on those discs is designed for the round pads on the GT & early GS bikes. It looks like you have the same outcome as with our GT250 — there is a lot of unused swept area with modern long+narrow pads.

What type of brake pad are you using?

Geoff, That seems counter intuitive.

Modern floating disks are typically 5mm or less rarely distort, even under race conditions. The two reasons for making them float are minor alignment issues and heat dispersal. They should heat more or less evenly. I wonder if the distortion is caused by the pads only sweeping the outer part of the disk.

Or maybe your rider uses the brakes way harder than most of us - or both :D .

Can EBC make you disks with the same center bolt spacing and with larger OD to match a disk with larger ID so that they look somewhat original?

My preference for GT front hubs is CBR600 disks which are thin and light but we match them to a more modern caliper and pad with less swept area. I realize that you have to use period style calipers, and that's where you have to start. I want to say that some Ducati disks would also work but it's been a while since I went through that exercise.

The key for me was to reduce unsprung weight. Having raced bikes with heavy front wheels that chatter like a MoFo when pushed, I decided to elminate that issue at source rather than trying to reduce chatter after it was built.

Thanks to both of you for that info on what fits our front hubs. It's always nice to see people sharing knowledge.

Salty_monk on the Suzuki GS forum has a list of modern discs with swept area that matches up with these calipers. He sells the adapter, which makes it a pretty easy upgrade.
A CBR600RR disc is on his list of parts that work with the upgrade.

We are going to use GS-series forks on the T500 cafe build. It uses the same big 296mm-OD discs as the GT500. The salty_monk kit requires the next size up, which is 320mm OD.
EBC makes a 320mm disc that works & has a reduced swept area. Its for some Honda that wasn’t exported to the US. Had a bit of luck on this one - the gold on the center section matches the gold Suzuki “S” badges that we are using.
