had a look in the hole where the breather was fitted and se no dam fitted.
the engine has been apart but what for?
when I had the bike started and on centre stand went through the gears and wheel turned.
in 4th/5th gear I applied the rear brakes but continued to urn even though I put a good pressure.
that's to me gears are ok.
I'm not going to bother stripping the engine down.
it lasted this long (9,000 miles) so it should last another.
I'll only be using the bike locally maybe 120 miles round trip.
on a good note....
once I started to strip this bike down it is in really good nick for it age 47.
just a couple of rust spot but that's just it.
decided to give it a little rub down and gloss painted.
stripped the carbs and the bowls were almost clean as a whistle.
the air box ..that I have modified to make the now hard boot to fit easier.
the boot seem to have shrunk in height so it was leaning towards the carbs and just about hanging off on the lower mouth of the carb.
the air box and other bits are now at powder coating .tank etc is getting resprayed.
heres a pic of the air box mod.
no oil dam.

You have to load your photos to a 3rd party hosting site such as flickr.com and insert the photo link using the Insert Img button you will see on the menu bar when composing your post.

Re: no oil dam.
If you aren't going to use it as a daily driver, I wouldn't worry much about not having the oil dam. Good thing to do if you were planning to pull the motor off and apart, but not something that I would do to just install the dam.
Use a quality oil in the case, and be mindful to check the level regularly. Cob together a dipstick to keep with your tools, mark it after doing a fresh oil change, then use it to check you haven't been burning up any case oil. 5th gear will hold together unless you plan on many long rides.

Re: no oil dam.
I may do about about a 1,000 miles a year maybe a little more or less.
just the odd weekend and week days.
I've got my other big bike to do longer runs etc.
as for the dip stick I plan on making one like I did the last time using a cable tie.
most of my rides on the 500 will be slow anyway on the country roads I go on may get up to 60/70 mph.
these roads are just big enough for one car to get through with passing spot for cars coming the other way.
is this any better?
