Refueb side panel badges

Post by daxman »

I got some 'GT250' badges from ebay and while they're not horrific they could use some help. Did anyone ever try to 'silver leaf' the capacity numbers 250, 380 etc.. on scratched/damaged badges?

Cheers

hi dax, the way i do them is this, provided the G and T letters are ok? sit there with a sanding block and take all the laquer off the top surface and polish out all the scratches. mask off the G and T letters and spray with etch primer. when dry, spray with gloss black. when dry, get sanding block again and polish all the black paint off the top surface of the numbers. polish carefully with solvol, and when you're happy with the sheen, laquer over it all. not quite the right way to do it, but they look a damned sight better than old scratched ones :D
cheers, dd.
ps, expect to use up at least 12 hours of your time :D

Aha - got it. Thanks. But the original finish is some kind of plating isn't it?

Why bother when you can still buy new ones?

Originality, money (I'm pathelogically mean), desire to 'make something nicer again', the new ones aren't as good (no smashing orangey bit in the middle)..
