is there anything that I need to do to run a sealed battery.
like a new regulator etc?

You can use it without mods. But some may say you should have a good regulator to avoid high voltage cooking it

The T500 has a pretty lame voltage regulator.
You should upgrade to a modern rectifier/regulator that limits voltage to around 14.5V when you use a modern maintenance free or AGM battery.

For what it's worth, normal 'wet' batteries tolerate overcharging and general abuse and are much cheaper than sealed AGM types ... if the bike has the standard charging system and reg/rec, I'd stay with the standard type.

As Dolly said, if it's got a new solid state reg/rec, that's different

ok thanks. I'll have to see what the bike is like when I get it.
hopefully I won't need to get the crank seals done...

You're wasting money if you don't need high cranking amps for a starter. Just use a standard battery on a 500 bud.

If keeping it completely stock, *and* the existing stock rectifier and regulator are good, then the stock lead acid battery is certainly serviceable.

But if you wish to upgrade the pitiful stock headlamp in the T500, then going the solid state rec/reg and AGM battery is a wise upgrade.

Or fit a HID or LED unit.
A mate has a 4LS front end on his T500 and crowned with a HID headlamp.
He can see and be seen!

I doubt that I'll be riding in the dark. no commuting these days.
so all my rides will be purely for pleasure.
if everything is working I'll just leave it bog standard.
I may fit an electronic ignition?
how long do points last and how often do they need adjusting?
its been nearly 14 years since my last T500 so I've a lot to catch up.

Well, on points my 550K did over 3000 miles without adjustment.
550A done about 2000 and still spot on.
Can't see the point of replacing summat that works ok.
The T500 doesn't rev as high so points should last longer.

+1 on points - set them up right and put a thin lick of grease on the points cam, and they'll stay in tune for a long time: at least 6 months or so of leisure riding.

Brand-new points do need a check after 300 miles or so (largely because the fibre heels wear quickly when new, then settle down) but after that, they're good.
