T250 engine rebuilt this weekend barrels and heads fitted but I cannot get it to go into gear, any ideas what the problem might be.

hi paul, thanks for the apology. right, we need some more info before we can suss this one out.
what gear was it in when you rebuilt it? don't rebuild in neutral on the 250's because of the gear brake on them.
did you try turning everything over when you tightened the crankcase bolts up? was it all free?
did you try the kickstart with the lever on it? did it turn freely?
did you set the gear selector shaft fork in the middle of the selector fork?
did you put the springs in the pawls on the end of the selector barrel?
and strangely enough, have you tried engaging gears with the front sprocket cover OFF?
you need it on to support the gear shaft - done it myself and baffled me for a bit.
there's a few ideas for you to start. get back to us if none of them are wrong, i'll see if i can think of anything else - apart from you've made a cock-up somewhere when you rebuilt the gearbox. :(
cheers, dd.

Hello
Thanks for the advice I stripped the motor and even though I took loads of photos during the strip down of the motor and I kept referring to them I had put one of the gear fork selectors in the wrong groove in the barrel mechanism it goes into gear ok now so I have rebuild the motor. I have sent my kickstarter to be re chromed but I'm hoping that it's all ok. I didn't want to try the kickstarter with mole grips in case I damaged the splines.

Cheers
Paul

you're not on your own doing that paul, i've done it myself many moons ago. either the top left or bottom left selector fork in the wrong groove [can't remember now, it was a long time ago] :D
you'd know if the kickstart shaft was ok or not from when you wound it back to fit the pawl etc. if it was tight then it isn't sitting right on the dowels. also, make sure all the crosshead screws in the clutch side are all impact drivered tight. they have a tendency to undo otherwise. other than that it sounds like it's sorted. keep us informed :D
cheers, dd.
