GT500 - Hard to push

Post by motomailer »

Dear Suzuki colleagues

To push my GT500 with a gear in and the clutch operated is very hard (engine is not running yet). In neutral it’s no problem at all.
Is that usual? What could it be otherwise? Problem with the clutch? Oil pump?
Any recommendations are welcome.

Best regards

Hi. If the clutch is badly adjusted, and you wont know that until it is running, then when in gear its possible the gearbox is not fully disengaged so it will still be turning even with the clutch in. If that makes sense! I also think there is a certain amount of drag anyway but not too much.

I doubt it would be the oil pump.
As already mentioned, dragging clutch is the first place to look. It may need adjusting, or you may find the plates are rusty, or something else related to clutch may be ineffective (e.g. Broken spring(s), worn thruster etc.).

A dragging clutch when pushing in gear is perfectly normal. But it's a matter of degree... -how hard is it to push?
Is it the same when it's hot and when it's cold?
What transmission oil did you put in it?

Dear all

thank you very much for your feedback.
When it's running I can't detect any clutch problem at all. But then it's hard to find out if there is any resistance due the oil pump, gearbox, etc.
The oil is 15W40. I guess it should be 20W40. Correct? Unfortunately I haven't tested if there is a difference when the engine is cold or warm. During the winter I'm going to check that and change the oil too. May that's the problem.

You will find that it is always a little harder to push when it is in gear. This is normal. If it is a LOT harder then you may have a problem.
When bump starting, I always push in neutral, jump on and rapidly knock it into 2nd gear, then let out the clutch.
