I have had the urge for a while to do a two stroke build after a couple unfinished projects in the past. Went to my local wreckers to see what kind of motors they had. Had a decent bit of odds and ends so I picked up these.

Both were stored indoors so i.m hoping they are not badly seized. I really only needed one but get a bit carried away with two stroke motors.

Before you do too much work on the engines, do a search on here for 'diesel' (top of the page under the 550 pic) and try the trick with putting some in the crankcases. It just might save you a lot of time and money.

Wow the 550 turns over freely. Not stuck at all  The 500 doesnt have anything to get hold of at the moment so I havent tried it.

At this point i have no clue what engine I will go with or what chassis I will use.It will be a cafe style build. I can get the original frame for the 550 but its in fairly rough shape.

If anyone can suggest a good candidate for either of the motors that would be awesome.

Any engine will fit in any frame if;
You have the nous.
You have the time.
You have the patience.
You have the money.

Otherwise, buy a standard bike and enjoy it!

I got a chance to pull one of the jugs off the triple. I am very pleased with the condition of this engine so far. The bores and pistons both look great. The piston rings are free. It looks like it hasn,t had much use since it was last freshened up. I am hoping to find more of the same when I investigate further.

The T500 seems pretty stuck so it is still marinating in diesel.

There was a piece of corn in the TP bowl. It must have ran on ethanol . :wth:

My wife has informed me that I only need one motor :wth: .I still have not got the pistons moving on the 500 but did discover the clutch shaft has quite a wobble. I removed the clutch assembly and the outer bearing is def shot. It seems there is something going on at the other end of it so I suspect another bad bearing at least inside the cc and possibly more.

Any how if it comes down to me getting rid of one I would be hard pressed to pick one (cause I want them both)

Which of the 2 has the potential for the best HP. It is my plan to do run chambers, do some porting and bigger carbs.

Cost wise the twin is the clear choice. If the damage inside is not too serious

I have spent quite a bit of time searching for info but really havent found a lot.

Is there a clear winner between the two when it comes to potential HP or are they fairly evenly matched?

Amaizing!!!!

Regards tuning capabilities, there is lots of stuff for the 500 and nothing for the 550 unless you di it yourself.
And I really do like the 550!
Lots of 500 specialists around and many still being raced and run quickly on the road.

I Lean toward the triples myself. I would do the porting myself and have found some specs that people have used for the 550. I dont know how trustworthy they are though. So far I have seen lots of places to send the 500 too but nothing as far as specs for the do it yourself'r. I may invest in some software either way.

Yippee. I finally got some movement on the 500. I hung it upside down a couple in above my bench and was able to get one cylinder to move about 1/2 in.

Keep both motors. My wife understands that it's better for me to have several bikes (I have seven Suzukis) instead of her and several girlfriends. :)

In theory, the 550 with shorter stroke can rev higher and with 10% more capacity could make 10% more power, but there's more to it than that.

Even a US spec 550 can be ported quite effectively. All the data I have seen on teh web on 550 porting is miles off, but there has to be a lot of stuff I have not seen. The bores are a bit small and therefore harder to port even with a small head right angle porting tool. It can be done though. three cylinders to port versus 2 and all teh ports have to be identical. Something to think about.

There's a bigger body of knowledge on the 500s which have been raced since Pontius was a pilot.

BTW, that piston is pretty well used. There's a lot of carbon on top and signs of blowby on the skirt.

Lmao too funny. My wife is actually really good about stuff but seeing as I am currently not working I can see her point.
