See Service Bulletin GT-26:

Upgraded clutch parts are NLA but occasionally show up on eBay.

The starter motors are available from bluesmokebaz on
http://www.kettleclinic.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, but please introduce yourself first!
They can be changed easily from under the engine without too much effort. You may need to whip off the clutch cover and take the clutch off to have a look at the starter clutch as that's the favourite, sometimes repairable, sometimes not. Depends what you have and what's wrong with it. Do it sooner rather than later as it could cause major issues if it locks or fails - early clutch type. I take it the correct oil is in there and has been changed as required?

If you do want to look at the starter motor only its off with exhaust system, unbolt the starter motor cover bottom of the engine. Dont forget to DRAIN the gearbox oil(flat bolt not the one at an angle) or you will get a shower, dont ask how i know this. Disconnect battery. Disconnect starter motor lead. Undo bolts holding motor and ease it out. There is an o ring on the end to keep the oil in the gearbox.

Probably the starter clutch, screwed to the back of the regular clutch. I always kick start my GT550 when cold. Almost no two strokes have electric start, anyways. Your shop manual has some detail on this. Make sure the battery, and cables are OK.
