Head Gasket Advice

Post by garyr »

I need to replace the head gasket..I found some antifreeze in a few cylinders, a very small amount.

I have the stock head gasket and aftermarket gasket. My question is the newer gasket better than OEM?

Also is there anything I should be doing while the head is off. I think I'll check the timing. I tighten all the oil injection fittings....they were loose.

The center cylinder was washed with more antifreeze but ok.

IMHO, best head gaskets are made by COMETIC in Ohio. Call them up and order one over the phone. They will want to know what bore size. For stock bores, 71mm is usually all you need. They will make one for you.

Others like copper gaskets, and there are a couple of people making those, but I have trouble getting them to seal tight.

I ordered a new set...they had copper and a soft set they called something. I ordered 2 sets of the soft ones..They take 3 days to make and a day to ship. I measured my stock bores they they were 70mm so they are making me the .71mm gaskets. They are cheaper than OEM and better than Varshich ones.

Thanks again TZ375 !!!

I know...I don't feel like trying to get the barrels off so no not now. I cleaned the cylinder up very well with Marvels Mystery Oil and Gibbs with super fine emery cloth. I did a compression test and 140 2 ctlinders and 120 for the center with 15k miles....so ok for now but not in the future.

Since this post I have about 800 miles on the bike and it runs awesome.

I did find Factory NOS stop leak, according to the manual you put in 2 tables....I got it on CSML.com.
