T500 Vape ignition relay

Post by Willsy69 »

Hi
Just trying to get my Vape ignition system connected up.
The instructions show a relay connected via the ‘ignition lock’
I’m assuming the ignition lock refers to the key ignition?
It does say you can wire without the relay.
Has anyone any fitted one of these and have any advice as to whether to fit the relay or not?
Wiring isn’t my strong point :wth:
Any help appreciated

Never heard of that one.
I have points fitted to all my Suzuki triples and they run fine.

I run points also, but I did add a relay on some of my bikes to give the ignition circuit better voltage. The orange wire coming from the key switch runs all the electric on the bike, it has many connections and is undersized for the load it runs, and looses voltage.
I ran a new wire from the battery to a relay, then from relay to coils, I used one of the orange wires that were feeding the coils to operate the relay coil, this way you get full voltage on the ignition coils.

I know several who have done the same and it works well.

I used the Vape ignition on my T500M and wired in the relay. Took a bit of figuring out but you’re correct that the ignition lock is the ignition key. I just used a tester to figure out which was the live feed from the ignition switch an wired the relay from that. Works fine. You can hear the relay drop out when you turn the ignition key off.
If you have any problems (you might have it sorted by now) I’ll try my best to help.
Wiring was the thing I was least looking forward to but wasn’t that difficult once I’d read and reread the instructions which aren’t great.

Good update, but I must admit, I prefer 'standard' as it's easier to fault find when the brown smelly stuff hits the round whirly thing when you're a long way from home!
Most faults on 70s wiring tend to be down to manky connections causing high resistance and volt/current drop on any or all circuits.
