This is one of those super opinionated topics! My favorite for transmissions is still Yamalube.

My preference is any oil sold as suitable for a two stroke transmission. We even used zero weight oil in our race bikes a while ago - transmission fluid - clear color.

I usually use Honda's Hp trans oil http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/3913815345 ... noapp=true" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

or Silkolene from Fuchs. http://www.silkolene.com/motorcycle/gea ... oil-light/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; or http://www.silkolene.com/motorcycle/gea ... comp-gear/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

MOTUL and others have similar products.

People argue that for our transmissions, almost any oil is better than what was available back in the day and we hardly stress them at all and they have a point, but when I am wringing it's neck changing gears at 8,000 plus with an air shifter at full throttle, I think I should use good oil. Oil is cheap and you use say 2L every year, how much do you save/waste by using cheap/expensive oil?

It's a personal thing. Whatever you decide to use, it will probably be just fine.

I had read somewhere I thought that castrol gtx 20w50 motor oil was recommended so I picked up some of that. I thought I read that on this forum but I can't seem to find it now. I might have to use it to do a quick oil change and then replace it with something recommended above.

I am appreciating the input here!

Edit: I just did a quick search and see that modern engine oil (like Castrol GTX above) isn't recommended because the friction modifiers can contribute to clutch slip. Castrol does make an oil that is compatible with wet clutches for motorcycles, MTX. Some people get away with using GTX and other engine oils just fine but others seem to have issues. Knowing this I change my recommendation to using oil specifically designed to cooperate with wet clutches.

The original factory workshop manual says 20w 40 engine oil in a good quality, but that i from back then where they didn't have friction modifiers in the oil as mentioned above..

I will try some of the stuff tz mentioned, as the bike inly eats ,7 lts so the price isn't that important.

Btw what effect will light oil have on the gearchange vs heavy oil ?

Cheers
