T500 Igntion Coil Advice

Hi all.

Little bit down at the moment as I am now the not so proud owner of some completely worn out ignition coils.

In pursuit of reliable, fat sparks, I intent to use aftermarket coil packs which will use the existing mounting hardware so in that respect I should be fine.

Now here's the question... Each coil has two soldered electrical connections, one coil has orange and black wires, the other orange and white. Does it matter which way round the two wires for each coil are connected?

Thanks!

Electrically it shouldn't make a difference, but I think its good practice to be consistent. The Orange wires are your positive connections and the black and white go to the points.

The the black and white should go the same coils as they currently do to keep the points / coli / firing cylinder right other wise your timing will be 180 degrees out. I would connect the same wires / terminals on each of the new coils the +ve feed and an the others 2 to the points.

Sorry if this is a bit patronising, but you did get coils for points / inductive ignitions and not ones for CDI as coils winding are different and you won't get that fat spark your seek if you got the wrong type.

Hope that helps.

Cheers Alan.

The existing coils don't appear to be marked in any way regarding positive terminals which makes it tricky, the fact they're not marked makes me think it might not matter.

The coils I intend to buy are T500 specific not GT which obviously has CDI so I think they should be just fine.

Thanks again.

Yes the coils won't be marked as electrically its not important. I just think its good to pick one terminal 'as positive' and do it the same on both coils. Perhaps I am just a bit OCD like that :wth:

Something I found with mine is the OEM coils are handed, the after market ones I got were not, so the body of the coil hit the frame if you have both HT lead either exiting towards the front or back on the stock mounting bracket . I mounted one pointing to the front and the other to the back and looped the cable round on the front pointing on so both plug caps sit one the plug the same way. Worth a test fit before trimming and cables in case you encounter similar issues.

Cheers

OCD is good Alan although if I wasn't, I might have quite a bit more cash in the bank right now!

I had noticed the coils don't sit 'upright' like the stock ones but rather more on their side so will do as you suggest, as long as they both appear to either drop down from the front or rear, I'm happy.
