t500 - shifter shaft "reversible"?

1973 T500. Gear shifter shaft splines on the left side of the bike are knackered - the PO had welded the shift lever onto the shifter shaft. The shifter shaft is one of those "double-ended" ones----there are splines on both ends.
Lever has been removed. I want to keep it as a left side shifting setup.
Question: (No snickering!!!) Can the original shifter shaft be pulled out, spun 180 degrees and reinstalled with the right hand side splines sticking out the left side? My belly tells me "no", but thought I'd ask....
Thanks

Nope...Nope...Nope... the shifting arm is welded to the shaft, unless you can figure out some way to remove and reattach the arm after flipping the shaft. Lots available on ebay.

Thanks Fred.
I've been watching ebay, there always seems to be a handful of "shifting fork shafts", have yet to notice any "shifting shafts". Guess I'm in the market for one if anyone has an extra kicking around.
Where in Ontario are ya Fred? I'm in Ottawa.

Stouffville....just a bit NE of TO, far enough that I'm on back country roads in about 5 minutes.

The answer is yes and no. The shaft is not symmetrical and cannot just be flipped over, but you can cut off the damaged end, drill it for a peg and then cut the end off the right side or any other shaft the same diameter and drill that . Pin the two halves together and silver solder them all and it will work for years.
The alternative is to find a replacement shaft NOS or used and swap them out.

I think all Suzuki splines are the same.....just find any old shaft in your local breaker, and do as TZ suggests.

Nice to be close to a playground for sure. I'm in a similar boat....Ottawa deep west end....close to decent riding, and about an hour to Calabogie Motorsports Park.
