Key less ignition on a GT500

I will soon be starting the wiring on my GT500 Cafe Racer and have got most of the items I need. One thing I was thinking about was using a key-less ignition. I have seen a very small unit that is basically a remote controlled relay, activated by a remote control like you have with a car.

I was considering using this to (A) avoid having a switch on show as I am going for the clean minimalist look, (B) its a reasonable security (C) I can switch it on as I walk up to it and put the remote in my pocket. I quite like the idea but I thought I would bounce the idea around you guys to get some thoughts.

Any other tips on doing the wiring would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Tony,

Nevwe used one but motogadget do a neat all in one control unit with add-ons like RFID keyfob switch and a little module that can fit inside the handle bar tube which provides a CANBUS style connection only requiring a couple of wires for all the switches to control all functions.

If you want go minimal and simplify wiring it looks a great option but at a price!

Thanks AK, I had not see motogadget before. some nice stuff but a bit expensive for me!

I will ponder a little longer before I make a decision.

There's a review of the Motogadget set up here:-

I like the idea of the transponder sewn into a glove 8)

Two issues to keep in mind.

The GT500 basically has two separate electrical systems:
1) It has the typical circuit powered by the battery, where the ignition switch OFF position cuts battery power.
2) It has the PEI ignition system, where the ignition switch OFF position grounds the PEI circuit.
Whatever you come up with will have to deal with the two separate circuits.

The keyless system is always on.
Cars have huge batteries so it isn’t much of a load on the battery.
The GT500 has a tiny battery & the keyless system is a constant load on that tiny battery.

Thanks, I have not coincided that... it would mean using a double pole relay, but thats not a problem. coincidentally, the remote unit came in the post yesterday so I will have a play around with it in the next few days
