Gt185 barely charging if any charge at all!!
I have a 74 suzuki gt185 I've been riding it for a few days now after a full fresh rebuild, I've been noticing that the gauge lights have been getting dimmer and dimmer and the charging light is super dim barely even on . Today I ended up walking the bike home 2 miles, it was getting dark so I turned the headlight on after I flicked the switch for the headlight the bike started to choke and finally died and would not start back up. I took the stator apart when I got home and cleaned it off with a 2000grit sanding block I didn't stay rubbing on it I just lightly brushed it enough to get some spots back to shiny . .. tomorrow I'll break out the volt meter but if anyone has any insight on this help a brotha out ... Thanks in advance.

Hi,sounds like your running on battery power & nothing else ! are the brushes actually in contact with the rotor slip rings .

Refer to the link for the service manual that I posted in the other thread. Couple of items to check:
1. Check wiring harness for any visible cuts, frays, loose wires.
2. Length of the brushes. Shop manual will give these, there is a minimum. If the brush is worn, the tension spring won't hold them "tight" against the armature.
3. Clean and check gap of the contact points inside the voltage regulator.

I checked the wiring all that is good, I also took apart the regulator and was really clean inside and the contacts were touching each other so I just scraped the contacts lightly with a flat screw driver and closed it back up ... as for the brushes I have no clue on what they are supposed to look like so I just made them shiny again with the sanding block and put it back together.

I would refer to the schematic in the manual and do an entire check of the electrical system with a meter. Check continuity and/or resistance across all terminations per manufacturer's values. I recommend not buying any parts until you've narrowed down what's wrong.

Re: Gt185 barely charging if any charge at all!!
So I found I need a voltage regulator. My question is ,has anyone found any alternative to the stock one? for example I know that you can use old Chevy Nova condensers on the gt185 but has anyone found anything for the regulator its just a 4 wire regulator and there is tons of old cars out there that had them. anyway I only ask because they cost about $150.00 brand new and I dont want to risk buying a used one and have it not work I just dont know if I want to spend that much right now. If anyone here has one for sale that has been tested and works I would gladly buy it otherwise I guess ill park the bike till I have the money to fix it.

Re: Gt185 barely charging if any charge at all!!
I found that a 1974 Volkswagen air cooled Beetle voltage regulator almost looks the same, the plug and everything looks like the gt185 plug 4 prong square plug. If anyone has any insight if it will work let me know I'm willing to try it only thing I'm worried about would be getting the wires to match up in the same order as the bike ground to ground power to power all that considering that the wires would be a different color on the Volkswagen regulator. Need to know ASAP Thanks in advance
