Petcock (fuel tap) V-seal

The later GT's and the early GS' petcocks had a V-seal that goes on the lever OD. Which way does the V face? Logic tells me it should face in toward the body. The petcock on mt 78 GS decided to give out after only 37 years. I bought a rebuild kit and it uses the V-seal. I can't get it in the way logic tells me. If I turn it around with the V facing out (toward the face plate), it goes together quite easily.Anybody know for sure which way it goes?
I should let you all know that the diaphragm side of the GS petcock is identical to those found on the later GT's.. The kit cost $23.96 - free ship om eBay. The brand is K&L and it's made in Japan. The kit includes a new diaphragm with the center plunger, the o-ring on the plunger, the 4 hole gasket, the petcock to tank gasket and the V-seal. $23.96 is way less the the than the ones you find for the GT', and way more complete. Parts are identical!

I'm 99% sure the open valley of the V faces outward, so that you'd 'fall into it' if approached from the outside. At least, this is how I recall trying to remember which way round it goes!
