shift return spring help

can anyone help me with a problem I am having on a gt380 1974 I am restoring ? I can not get the shifter return spring in the correct position to operate correctly it shifts through all 6 gears but no spring tension to return when upshifting I have a factory manual but it does not say how it goes in any help would be greatly appreciated
