76 GT550. I've read a lot about how the crossovers leak and to use high temp RTV to prevent the blow by.. Where do you put it? The short crossover tubes have an inside radius on the ends. Is that where it should be applied? or do you put it in the muffler 'cups' and then install the connector tubes?. I'd hate to force any sealant in the hole. Any advice appreciated!
Also, do I need 6 or 8 helpers on hand? :)

The crossover tubes should have a new black o-ring on each end. That fits inside the grooves. After the pipes are assembled and on the bike. Use the atv silicon between the lips of the outer pipes and the crossover tubes. That way it's hidden well and it seals where it should. Works well, if you let it dry for 24hrs or more. I would use it after you install the springs. If you have them. It helps to tap the tubes into place with a rubber hammer, etc. They won't quite seal right, if they're not forced into place. Clean all oil and deposits, best you can in that area. Mine leak in particular, because someone at one time broke off a hook that the spring attaches to. If it weren't for that. They probably wouldn't leak. I'd like to get that fixed. But, my pipes are way too nice.

I'm probably going to loose one as well. One hoop was severely bent almost to the pipe surface I started to bend it back and got that sick feeling when you feel it start to give too eady. I stopped bending but I know it's weak. Probably will break off in short order.
