Spanner nut #1 tightens against #2 whether it be the stock setup or the top of the tapered roller bearing. Then #6, the dust shield drops over spanner nut #1. Simple enough, except the ridge on #6 is taller than the recess on #1. Left like this, the upper triple tree tightens against the whimpy plastic ridge of the dust shield instead of tightening against #1. The tree never touches #1 - only the plastic.
I just got done grinding the ridge off the dust shield so the tree would tighten correctly against the spanner nut. Even the outer ridge was not enough so I had to Dremel off some on the inner ridge of the dust shield as well. The tree now tightens against the spanner nut and the dust shield is free to spin. But I still don't feel like I should need to modify anything to make things fit correctly. Did I miss something?
