Leaking Oil Pump

Post by Tom W. »

Hello Everyone:
Glad to see the board is back! Did a tune up on the T500 and it's running great. Spooned on a set of Cheng Shins and that made the ride much nicer. However, I seem to have a leak at the oil pump. I cleaned the pump area and snugged up the banjo bolts, but that didn't make any difference. It appears the oil is coming out from the tachometer cable fitting. It seems like a significant leak since there's a puddle on top of the case after sitting there a week. Any ideas on what might be wrong? The bike's running good, so I'm reluctant (or maybe too lazy) to pull everything apart.

I tried searching the archives, but a huge number of posts came up.

Thanks,
Tom

Is it the 2-stroke oil or trans oil

My 550 was doing what you describe. I replaced the seal and it still leaked. Then I discovered a split in the cable jacket very near the tach drive. I replaced the cable and the leak stopped.

Barry, I've been using a blue-colored 2 stroke oil and that's what leaks out. I use dinosaur oil in the tranny.

Cyote, that sounds odd to me. So, you think your oil pump forced oil up into the tach cable and then it leaks out? I guess there could be a bad seal (o-ring?) inside the pump that allows the oil to work up into the tach cable attachment area.

So, has anyone rebuilt an oil pump lately? Is there a rebuild kit or do I need to look for another pump?

Thanks,
Tom

Tom, I don't know enough about a 500 to be a player here. I don't even know where the tack drive is located on those motors.
On the 550, the tach drive is a good foot away from the oil pump. Mine was leaking tranny oil.

There is a seal at the bottom of the pump that will allow oil from the transmission to leak thru the pump and also the large nut at the end of the pump has an o-ring that will crack and leak injector oil.

No such luck, Tom. There is no such animal as an oil pump rebuild kit. Suzuki intended these to be throwaway items if/when they developed problems.
You CAN, however, replace various bits as Zook-e points out. The trick is to find suitably dimensioned bits that are made from the right materials.

I had a few of those oil pump seals..sold them on ebay.
you can still get those seals from any company that sells different seals.
I can get them but I would have to have the originals.

Hell my oil pump leaks from... how do I explain this?
you know where there throttle cable hooks up to the pump and that whole piece moves as you open the throttle... well thats where mine leaks from and there is no fixing that!
I replaced all the orings and seals on the pump and stopped all the other leaks but that last one, well there is nothing I can do about it. so I live with it, it sucks I know but hey what can i do?

Sounds like the pump is worn on teh shaft from the lever/actuating arm.

You could possibly strip the pump, machine a shallow groove in the shaft and reassemble with an O ring on the shaft

Or bore teh top housing and insert a thin wall bronze bush if the wear is in the housing rather than the shaft.

OR machine a groove on the end of the pump body where the shaft/lever protudes so you can slide an o-ring into it that will compress just enough to seal it when you fit the arm on.
Two strokes, its just that simple.

I like that one Allan. I suppose you could just cut a chamfer with a drill point or chamfering tool in teh end of the housing to form a recess for the O ring.

I will pull it apart again and see if those are viable solutions guys.
