Leak from gear shift lever shaft...?

So I put a new clutch in last weekend and in the process removed the gear shift lever shaft.

Since reinstalling I'm dripping oil from the shaft on the left side (lever side) around the shaft.

I understand there is both an internal and external seal. Could I have dropped the internal seal when I removed the shaft? Or is it possible that just the seal on the shaft side with the shifter is bad?

What am I looking at for repairs?

I think it's losing a good deal of oil because I noticed a clutch chatter presumably because the oil level inside had dropped so much.

I've had problems with the gear shift oil seals leaking. A small leak can eventually add up because the oil seal is below the normal oil level.

Didn't do the work myself, but replacing the seal is not that big of a job.
Just need to remove enough parts so you have good access to the seal.

My thinking too. I've had the sprocket cover off a bunch so no big deal there. Supposing I can just pry the old seal out and pop the new one in.

Is there anything else I should be weary of? When removing the shift shaft in particular. That spring was a treat...

Often the shifter shaft has been marred by the chain dragging on it and if you dont dress out that damage to the shaft when you pull the shaft through the seal it will them damage the seal and then it leaks . The shifter shaft seal is easiest r&r with the shifter shaft removed .

Dave, that makes perfect sense!

Ordered a seal from Paul Miller... Hopefully it's actually the right seal :-O
