Both the S mirrors I got with the bike have a recess where the post attaches. Both are the same. An S mirror I sold a long time ago also looked like this. Is this recess supposed to be there or are they deformed?

Yes, these are deformed. The tilting joint often got stiff and, because the mirror backs are of thin metal sheet, they would often 'give' before the joint moved!

+1 - they've oil canned. You can sometimes very gently pull them out again, but in the process risk breaking the glass. Perhaps best to leave them be.

I have done it using this method - doesn't always work, and finding the right size of replacement mirror glass is difficult, but it can be done.
