Or the other old favourite.... kicked the bike for ages can't work out why it aint working, removed plug...no spark! Checked points, checked wiring...oh wait....who the bloody hell turned my kill switch off?

You're not the first - and won't be the last! I always use the switch to stop the engine, soit always gets checked before starting - and the starter doesn't work if it's off.
Think of how stupid the average person is, then realise that half of them are more stupid than that.
