Re: excessive oil consuption
havnt pulled pump off yet, doing a bit of reading to see how pump actually works,i can see if a piston is stuck it will block oil but cant see how it would give me more, can someone enlighten me as to what i should be looking for when i pull pump apart and if anything else in pump could cause it

Re: excessive oil consuption
The Suzuki designed oiling system thought fairly complex in design is fairly simple in action . As you already know oil goes from the tank , through the pump that controls both pressure and volume and then to the engine . I cannot think of anything else but the pump that could be over feeding oil to the engine while the engine is running. Remove and block the oil feed line , remove the carb linkage and 3 screws .. the pump is in your hands . Just grab the pin that goes through the pump drive shaft as you pull the pump off and check for any loose O rings .

got the pump off and pulled it apart, cant see anything that sticks out as faulty all pistons free and working okay,if the o ring seal at bottom of pump is leaking could this cause it and where would the oil go

Suzuki used a number of pump designs. Also, noticed you listed a few different bikes under "bikes owned".

Re: excessive oil consuption
Let's take a step back for a moment. As jabcb has offered - what bike are we talking about ? Also - what exactly are the symptoms ? Oil drains in when the bike sits for several days ? Always heavy smoking regardless of pump arm setting ? Leaking oil in area of the pump ? You had the top off of the pump to take a look during a rebuild, but now is smoking a lot ? Etc.kiwi wrote:got the pump off and pulled it apart, cant see anything that sticks out as faulty all pistons free and working okay,if the o ring seal at bottom of pump is leaking could this cause it and where would the oil go

Oh........rightSuzukidave wrote:Check out the first post guys

So - how many miles on this old girl ? As the pump wears it actually pumps more eh ? If all is set up correctly, and the arm is not out by 180 degrees, and it isn't leaking out elsewhere, then actual pump wear is a possible cause.

Re: excessive oil consuption
I wonder if it couldnt have something to do with the early J pump as those also came with the pumps that would pull oil from the tank , these were later replaced with the gravity feed pumps . I have read of oil tanks being crushed when the oil tank cap vent was blocked .

Re: excessive oil consuption
This is so strange what could be causing the system to use so much oil ?

Re: excessive oil consuption
Dennis, you mentioned that the new (to you) pump is a later model. Presumably that means it's a 312 pump to take the link rod rather than a 310 to take a cable. The actuating arm can be swapped over from one to another. Just make sure that the "cam" is the right way up.
