Oh, and if that wasn't enough, when I got it all put back together, the kick starter doesn't work....it doesn't turn the motor over at all anymore, and seems to have too much axial play in it now.

I know I fouled something up, so it's all got to come apart again tomorrow.

It sounds like the kick starter spring wasn't preloaded when it was put back together. If that happens you will have play in the lever and the gear will not engage. With axial play though you may be missing a spacer which could also cause the gear to not engage. Hope you get it all figured out.
