Was that green funk hard? It almost looks like epoxy.
I'm just hoping that they're not too terribly expensive as I only need that one carb. The green stuff is corroded metal as far as I can tell. It doesn't chip off or anything. Oddly enough too is that the body itself was clean...there wasn't a lot of gas residue or anything in there...just that corroded surface.

Looks to me like someone tried to clean that carb with muriatic acid. I tried stripping powdercoat off of an aluminum footpeg once and it left the exact same results. Good luck finding just one carb off the rack, you may want to just get the whole thing off ebay...

to clean your carbs with out any ill affect use malt or any vinnigar and leave it for a couple of days. this will clean out of the SH*T out.

Vinegar really works? I have never heard that one. But I guess it stands to reason it is an acid. Does it discolor the the carb bodys?

I never heard that one before either. I have mine sitting in 70/30 Pine Sol and water and they are really clean now.

Also, my buddy came home after staying with his girlfriend for two weeks (I lease out a room to him) and he was so excited about the parts bike as he had recently sold his really nice '95 sportster hardtail that he put a lot of time and effort into building that he asked if he could buy it from me. So, we have dueling builds in the garage now! Going to be a fun winter. I think he's going to be doing a cafe/bobber/ratty type build while I'm doing a neo-traditional cafe racer. Probably going to fit new forks on it (maybe GSXR?), get rid of the seat and fenders and anything else that's not necessary for it to run. Fun times!

well just take a look at these carbs!!!! is that good enough proof for ya.
no it will not eat or discoloured the carbs.
I had one troubl some jet that I could not get at but vinnigar did.

well I am going to do it this weekend. My next question is do I use regular white vinegar or do I need apple cider vinegar. :lol: No really, I can't figure out how to remove the cable from the slide? Is there a trick for it?

I have used WHITE vinegar several times. For best results put the carb and vinegar on high in a crock pot for about a half hour. Spray off with aerosol brake cleaner/carb cleaner/whatever and they will be good as new.

Might want to keep an eye out at garage sales for an old crockpot just for this...

Learn something new everyday. I will definitely be getting a crock pot for that. How far down do you have to disassemble the carbs? I mean can you leave the jets in while it is cooking?

I used a mix of malt vinegar, diluted with water and some simple green cleaner in a cheap ultra sonic cleaner from Harbor Freight which has a heat cycle. They were on sale at the time, and then they gave me an additional discount so I think I walked out the door with it for about $35 :D As John says, the vinegar works a treat, and yes I did disassemble the carbs before putting them in the bath. 8)

No - agreed not over night. I did mine in in the hot bath ultra sound for about 8 minutes total. Longer than that is asking for trouble. :shock:
