Right, Allan, it is just above the lower tree. Water was in the sealed (?) headlamp ear.

Hmm ok I got you now, thats serious damage you speak of. It may pay to allow a small drain hole cutout on the inside lower edge of the ear near the bottom so water cannot collect.
Unfortunately you're not the first guy that's happened to, rocky. What a shame !!! However.....
New stanchions can be got from Forking By Frank in Chicago, Rocky.
They've been in the business doing this since ~1968 so they know their stuff.
Their quality is beyond question.
I also seem to remember and italian company doing the same thing. they used to run ads in Classic Motorcycle Mechanics magazine from time to time, IIRC. If you want, I'll look back through some old issues and see if I can find the info for you.
